THE DOCTOR IS IN

Dr. Erika Mason, DDS
obstructive sleep apnea specialist | sleep better virginia owner
For over 30 years, Erika Mason, D.D.S. had built a highly successful general and cosmetic dental
practice in Richmond, Virginia. In August 2016, she sold it and has been exclusively limiting her
practice to treating patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) with her business “Sleep Better
Virginia”. Since Osteoarthritis caused her to have 4 separate thumb surgeries, Dr. Mason could not performgeneral dentistry anymore thus switching to Dental Sleep Medicine. In the fall of 2008, that is when Dental Sleep Medicine started for her. 2014 is when she accomplished earning 2 diplomate certifications with the ABDSM and ACSDD. She was a co-founder of VADSM and past-president. VADSM was founded in 2012 and in 2018 it merged with the VASM. Dr. Mason’s passion is Sleep and so she has been instrumental in helping create webinars that dentist can learn from as well as lecturing for various companies on various levels of sleep medicine. She has had the opportunity to help out the training initiative of the active duty dentist to learn DSM and train them to provide OAT to active duty soldiers so they are deployable with an OA instead of a PAP. She definitely has been a pioneer in paving the way in helping Veteran’s being treated via OAT and being one of the beta tests for the most usage of Compliance Recorders from various companies. She has been one of the second largest users of MATRx Sleep Studies in the country. Dr. Mason wants to pave the way to make it easier for other dentist to be reimbursed and treat patients with OAT. She doesn’t shy away from challenging Insurance companies or taking on Medicare and fighting for better compensation, newer and better oral appliance rules and regulations. She is always up for the challenge of whatever comes up! DSM is so rewarding and she is so thankful that she had a vocation to venture into once the issues of her thumbs came about. Who would of thought that dentist could change peoples lives and help them to sleep better and to be healthier with just a little piece of plastic.
